Fraud against the Federal government can occur in any setting where the government pays or receives money. Therefore, it can occur in almost every walk of life. Here are some of the more common examples:
1. Research Fraud : The Federal government very often sponsors scientists and other researchers to examine, analyze and develop new products, methods and technologies, such as medical vaccines, electrical or computer components or new industrial or engineering designs. However, some individuals who receive these grants might not use them for the purpose they were awarded. This illegal activity hurts our nation's educational advancement and advantage in innovation.
2. Import/Export Fraud : When a company decided to sell goods overseas, or brings goods in from foreign lands, there is often a special tax on them, such as a luxury, import or excise tax. To avoid paying the full amount legally required, some companies might undervalue the price or the quantity of the products they ship or receive. This will reduce the amount they owe to the government, even though they legally should have paid more.
3. Prescription Drug Fraud: Nowadays, many companies are offering knock-off versions of prescription or over-the-counter drugs. They are also altering the ways they create drugs in order to make their production cheaper. They can then pocket the difference. Both of these activities are unlawful, and not only do they cheat the government out of tax and Medicare money, they can also pose a substantial danger to those that use these unapproved drugs. |
